About

Masih Alinejad is an Iranian-American journalist and activist renowned for her fearless advocacy for women's rights and freedom of expression in Iran. Born in a small village in Iran, she rose to prominence through her daring journalism, challenging the status quo and empowering countless women to defy oppressive laws. As a vocal critic of the Iranian government, Masih has inspired a global movement advocating for human rights and personal freedom.

My Stealthy Freedom

Masih worked in Iran for more than ten years, covering the Majlis (Parliament) for Hambastegi newspaper and later as a columnist for Etemaad Melli. After being forced to leave Iran in 2009 due to her bold reporting, Masih continued her activism abroad. She produced a multi-award-winning radio series on the victims of the 2009 crackdown against those protesting the disputed presidential elections. Currently, she reports and presents a weekly TV segment on VOA called Tablet, where she skillfully combines hard news with satire. In 2014, Masih created the My Stealthy Freedom movement through a Facebook campaign, which now has around 1 million followers. The MSF movement is the largest women's campaign in Iran, empowering women to share photos of themselves without hijabs in protest of the country's strict dress codes. Masih and My Stealthy Freedom have been covered by more than 100 media organizations globally, including Vogue, Reuters, The Guardian, The New York Times, Le Monde, La Repubblica, and Der Spiegel. In February, the Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy awarded Masih their Women’s Rights Award for “giving a voice to the voiceless and stirring the conscience of humanity to support the struggle of Iranian women for basic human rights, freedom, and equality.” Her writings have been published in numerous newspapers and magazines, including the Huffington Post, Time Magazine and the Washington Post.

The anti-regime protests in Iran — triggered by the death in police custody of the 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini — are now in their third month. More than 400 protesters have been killed since then; at least another 15,000 have been arrested.

Women are leading a revolution in Iran. When will Western feminists help?

A new popular uprising is taking place in Iran, and this time women are in the lead. It’s incredibly inspiring to see — for the first time I can remember — unveiled women marching at the front.
